FILTER – TV – Film – Audio - Photography
a) Film and photography. A filter made of glass or GELATINE and placed in front of the lens of a camera. Used to change the way light reaches the lens e.g. by adding colour, or by diffusing the light in a way that will create a particular ‘look ‘ to a scene. e.g. a graduated filter can be used in a WIDE SHOT of countryside to make a grey sky appear blue, but not change the colour of the scenery in the lower third of the picture. There are many types of filters. Many camera operators carry a box of their favourite filters.
b) Audio. A sound filter is an electrical circuit that is used to take out unwanted frequencies from a particular sound source. These could be very high notes that might have distorted, or the rumbling of traffic from a news recording.
