EYELINE –TV – Film

In setting up a shot for any moving image project it is vital that the eyeline of a character talking or reacting to another character, or to something outside the frame, is matched in terms of the direction in which the eyes are looking.  In a simple scenario of a person on a horse talking to someone standing at street level the character on the horse must be seen to look down and towards the position of the street character. The street character must look up towards the person on the horse. This eyeline must be particularly carefully set up for the CLOSE UP shot, and CONTINUITY kept for all the other shots. In more complex SET UPS the eyelines have to be very carefully matched to maintain cinematic credulity and realism.
