BOOM – TV – Film
Moveable arm to hold a microphone or a camera. In a TV STUDIO refers to a sound boom which is a mobile piece of equipment used in large TV studios. A microphone is mounted in a cradle on a telescopic tube which is fixed to an adjustable column on a specially designed three wheel trolley. The mic is swung out over the top of cameras to keep out of shot and get the mic as near as possible to the contributor, for optimum sound quality. A skilled operator sits on a seat on the boom trolley and controls the reach, direction and angle of the mic with a system of wire pulleys. This allows the mic to follow the action and pick up a natural sound perspective.
