Short for background information or research, throughout the media. In an article or magazine the background is that part of the article that contextualises the story and fills the reader in on what lead up to the events. Also means a file or files with press cuttings and other relevant information about a particular story, event or celebrity e.g. ‘have you got the background on Britney Spears?’.
