There is a need in Media Studies, like all social sciences and critical subjects, to engage with theory and students should be encouraged to do so in their work. Using a theory is an effective way of a student demonstrating their understanding of the topic under discussion, adding weight to their arguments and undeniably lending gravitas to their answer.
