Tell the world

What do you want to tell the world? It’s a good idea to have something you want to talk about or discuss with the world. This is not the frustration you get on the bus when you have to stand all the way again, and you really do want to tell someone something. That could make a reasonable item for a short comedy sketch, but it will not make a film or television programme. You may just want to tell the world that you can write really good entertainment.

You...

Radio Part 1 »

Jeremy Orlebar | Wednesday November 11, 2009

Categories: Other Topics, Production Zone, Audio Production, Radio, Intro to Radio

Why Radio?

Radio is a great medium to work in. Radio is a great way to listen to music, and radio is a great friend on a long journey or just at home.

At one time radio was the only way to hear the latest pop songs, and albums and to keep up to date with the top selling singles in the charts.

Before music television (MTV began in America on August 1st 1981) young people listened to the radio, and bought singles after they had heard them on the radio.

Radio has developed in...

Radio is about people, and getting people to talk is the most basic job of a radio presenter, researcher or producer.

Working in radio you will talk to a very large number of people on and off air.

On air it is important to get the most out of every contributor. Questions need to be tailored to the needs of the programme and to what the audience expects. You have to help the contributor to do this.

You may be talking to someone who has never before been interviewed on...

Music is important across all media sectors from radio drama, soundtracks for film and televison, sound for a computer game, web site effects to obviously music production.

Even...

1. Understanding Sound

Sound is a feature often dismissed by students as the least important element, when in fact it can provide as much meaning for the audience as every visual and technical facet.

In this scene from Reservoir Dogs the song playing on the radio “Stuck In The Middle With You” is contrapuntal to the action, revealing the psychopathic nature of Mr Blonde. Parallel sound would have created a completely different sense, such as in the second clip: Casino...

Community Radio Stations or RSL radio – Restricted Service Licence Radio Stations exist in most communities.

They are excellent places to make contact with as they can present opportunities for students in terms of observing and participating in radio production.

Try local hospitals too as they often have internal radio stations.

Setting up an RSL is possible and is covered in Ofcom’s website and Ofcom’s Guide to Community Radio is a useful starting point. It’s more a...

OCR AS G323 Radio Drama Scheme »

Jeremy Orlebar | Wednesday September 02, 2009

Categories: A Level, OCR A Level, OCR AS, Other Topics, Production Zone, Audio Production, Radio, Radio Drama, More on Radio

This unit is an alternative to studying G322 Television Drama. For some students and centres it will be more attractive than TV Drama especially for students interested in audio technology, music and music production.

Resources

The technical resources for this unit are very modest – all radio can now be accessed on the internet, although a reasonable stereo sound system for classroom use would be beneficial. It is important to be able to hear the stereo dynamics and audio...
