Thinking about the Media – Investigating (Newspapers) and Planning (Radio News)

  • A01: Recall, select, and communicate their knowledge and understanding of media products and the contexts in which they are produced and consumed
  • A02: Analyse and respond to media texts/topics using media key concepts and appropriate terminology
  • A03: Demonstrate research, planning and presentational skills
  • A04: Construct and evaluate their own products using creative and technical skills

Question 1 (a) 4 marks

A02: Analyse and respond to media texts/topics using media key concepts and appropriate terminology

2 marks for Broadsheet, 2 marks for Local Newspaper

1 mark awarded if the Romford Recorder is described as a tabloid.

Question 1 (b) 6 marks

A02: Analyse and respond to media texts/topics using media key concepts and appropriate terminology

Level 1(0-2)

1-2 marks awarded for basic description e.g. a broadsheet is bigger or there are lots of pictures on the Romford Recorder

Level 2 (3-4)

Description of some conventions emerging (3-4) e.g. Broadsheets like The Guardian has serious news stories or Local Newspapers have news about one area

Level 3 (5)

5 appropriate conventions identified using some media terminology e.g. Broadsheets like The Guardian run with hard news stories on their front cover, Local Newspapers deal with regional issues, Local Newspapers have inclusive modes of address, Broadsheets have a high ratio of photography to text

Level 4 (6)

Sophisticated identification of the conventions of both Broadsheets and Local Newspapers – 3 clear examples for each described using appropriate media language

Question 2 (10 marks)

A02: Analyse and respond to media texts/topics using media key concepts and appropriate terminology

10 marks for fully explaining how one of the newspapers appeals to its target audience

Identifies target audience and then systematically identifies the way the newspaper generates audience appeal and interest...
