WJEC A2 Media Studies MS3: Media Investigation and Production

MS3 contributes to synoptic assessment and crucially demonstrates the importance of research in informing media production. The three components of the unit are:

  • Research Investigation (1400 – 1800 words): 45 Marks
  • Production (informed by the investigation): 45 Marks
  • Evaulation (500 – 750 words): 10 Marks

Research Investigation: MediaEdu Exemplar: Documentary and Genre

This is an individual piece of work that allows students to focus on one of the following concepts, underpinned by significant secondary research evidenced in the essay.

Two key texts must be referred to in the investigation:

  • Genre
  • Narrative
  • Representation

Production: MediaEdu Exemplar: 4 Minute Documentary Short Film

The production should clearly develop from, and be informed by the research investigation – it must be in a different form from the AS production and group work is only permitted for audio-visual work. Here, however it is important for assessment purposes that students must evidence a clear role and contribution to the production (this will be shown in the sample brief).

Evaluation

When embarking on the Evaluation it is important to remember only 10 marks is awarded for this piece of work but that it still can mean a difference between a grade. Experience suggests that students can often be let down at the end of a successful project by an Evaluation that does not offer a full reflection of the production.

As an individual piece the Evaluation explores how the production has been informed by the research undertaken into the relevant media concept. Acceptable forms include:

  • A discursive essay (with or without illustrations)
  • A digital presentation e.g. using Prezi or PowerPoint
  • A suitably edited Blog.

Assessment

Three assessment objectives are used to assess MS3 - one for the Research Investigation, Production and Evaluation:
