B324 is the more creative, production based Controlled Assessment as part of the OCR GCSE Media Studies course – if taught over two years it is recommended that the pupils start B324 in year 11 allowing for 10 weeks minimum (dependent on weekly contact time) to complete the project which comprises 30% of the qualification (see example Year 2 mini SOW below). OCR recommends 25-30 hours but 30 hours maximum. If the course is taught over 1 year then B324 will be the final Controlled Assessment. See associated resources OCR GCSE Media Studes Mini Student Scheme of Work.docx.
Pupils can work individually or as part of a group (maximum size 5) which is another fundamental difference to B321 but have to produce individual evidence of research and planning and an individual evaluation. It is recommended that from the range of OCR Briefs below, those chosen reflect the area of teaching expertise and equipment, software and training available in the school/college. According to OCR:
“Candidates entering production work for this specification will be at a serious disadvantage if their teachers are unable to support them in the use of technology and software. They will be at a further disadvantage if there is insufficient technology for them to use. The minimum requirements for the delivery of the production portfolio in media are:
- Digital technology suitable for the construction of media texts in response to the set briefs
- Suitable internet access for research and (where necessary), presentation of student work?.
It is also crucial when choosing the Brief that a minimum of three different media areas are covered across the specification including one print and one audio-visual based medium. B324 is worth 120 marks.
