NCFE Level 2 Unit 4: Investigate Typefaces in Developing a Graphic Design Interface

Introduction

In this unit you will investigate the use of text in graphic design through typeface and typography but also how text interacts with other elements on screen-based media.

The work you will undertake will give you specialist knowledge of the graphic design media sector but even more specifically the format and layout of text.

Below are some excellent links to help you understand the rules of typography with further links to tutorials and additional resources:

  • Typography rules and terms that every designer must know on Creative Bloq (really good for terminology)
  • A 20 Minute Intro to Typography Basics on Design Tuts+ (a useful academic resource that provides a basic introduction to typography)
  • Graphic Design Tutorial by Shawn Barry (American YouTube video but useful for studying typography in application: relevant for understanding the relationship typography has with the image).

This qualification is known as a V Cert and will allow you to progress onto any level three qualification e.g. the NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Interactive Media and from there a range of university courses specialising in graphic design.

This is a technical qualification that allows you to learn practical skills and this particular unit is optional (you don’t have to take it). It is portfolio based and graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

You will have to undertake the following, which will be assessed:

  • Read and understand the interactive design brief (below) and then undertake research - a Research File will be your evidence (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4)
  • Develop and explain a range of ideas and solutions to fulfil the brief (2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4) - an Illustrated Design Portfolio will be your evidence.

To allow you to understand how you will be assessed for the Research File and Portfolio your teacher will be looking for evidence that you have completed what is called Assessment Criteria.
