Lesson Title: An Introduction to Examined Unit MS4 – Selecting Texts

Context

This lesson would be delivered early in term two as an introduction to the requirements of the examined module MS4 while the students are completing their MS3 coursework. The exam itself is involved enough to warrant an in-depth outline while giving the opportunity to discuss industry and texts for further study.

Aims and Objectives

To introduce students to MS4 and to outline approaches to study, identifying the three industries and nine texts to be analysed and explored. Students will be familiar with the assessment requirements of MS4 and have the opportunity to independently become familiar with the texts that will be analysed in each exam essay.

Sequence of Activity/Resources

  • On Smart Board, one PPT slide for each MS4 industry available for study on the Smart Board with three images reflecting the three texts as stimulus – Music, Film, Newspapers, Video Games, Television, Radio, Advertising, Magazines. Against each identify the three texts that would be studied (see below). Activity1: In groups, students discuss, and feedback on preferred options for study: 15 min
  1. Music Artists/Performers – Beyonce, One Direction and Paloma Faith
  2. Film – Star Trek into Darkness, Gravity and The Double
  3. Newspapers – The Sun, i Newspaper, Local Newspaper (to your region)
  4. Video Games – Bioshock: Infinite, Uplink, Tomb Raider (2013)
  5. Television – CSI (original), X-Factor, One Born Every Minute
  6. Radio – The Chris Evans Breakfast Show (Radio 2), The Now Show, Doctor Who: To The Death (BBC Radio 4 Extra)
  7. Advertising Campaigns – BT Infinity, Yorkshire Tea (including virals), Old Spice Smell Like Man
  8. Magazines – Grazia, FHM, Big Issue
  • Groups take democratic vote on preferred 3 industries...
