Lesson Title: An Introduction to Identities and the Media


This lesson would take place typically in mid-February, after completion of MEST4: Media Research and Production and serve as an introduction to a topic new to the AQA A2 Media Studies Specification. The lesson, and topic will allow learners to develop an understanding of Identities and the Media in part through their own cultural reference points.

Aims and Objectives

To introduce students to the requirements of MEST4 topic, Identities and the Media and to reference and analyse a sample area of study, facilitating selection and choice of own topic. Students will fully understand how Identities and the Media differentiates from Representation and will be able to make informed choices as to their own area of study.

Sequence of Activity/Resources

  • Open Q&A – what is Representation and what is Identities and the Media? 5 min
  • Plenary on Aims and Objectives explaining the topic, illustrating with a range of examples including British National Identity, Cultural Identities and the Hollywood Male Lead and Cultural Identities of Old Age – key focus on how representations are used to construct identity with supporting PPT slides 10 min
  • Activity 1: in groups, discuss and explain what you think the following terms mean with examples if possible: 20 min (10 min discuss, 10 min feedback)
  1. Self Representations (social media)
  2. Collective Identity (how social groups can be categorised in homogenous ways)
  3. Dominant and Marginalised Identities (link to mainstream and independent media)
  4. Audiences Uses and Responses to Identity (bring in the Uses and Gratification model but also link to reasons behind the commercial production of identity as much as audience identification of it)
