WJEC GCSE Media Studies Section B Mock Exam

You should study the two comics on the separate sheet carefully. One is a story about Desperate Dan from the comic Dandy and the other is a page from Hunt Emerson’s ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’.

5. Choose one of the comics and explain how two of the following have been used. [10]

  • Frames
  • Links
  • Speech bubbles
  • Neologisms

6. Create a new comic which targets 15 year old girls or boys.

Task 1

Suggest a name for your new comic.

Task 2

Create the layout for the front cover of your comic and identify key features.

Task 3

Write notes to explain your layout / design.

Task 4

Explain how the cover will attract readers to your comic. [20]

7. Using examples (you MUST describe these comics well), explain two ways in which comics target different audiences.The examples can be from comics you have studied in class or read at home. [10]

8. Suggest two reasons why comics have continued to be a popular media form. Briefly explain your reasons. [10]
