CCEA GCSE Moving Image Arts Component 1: Creative & Technical Moving Image Production

Welcome to the external assessment (exam) component of the CCEA Moving Image Arts GCSE qualification - it is worth 40% of the overall GCSE and comprises a 1.5 hour online exam. In the exam students respond to a range of stimulus material including unseen live action and animated film clips, sound clips, film stills and script extracts - we will give you clear guidance below.

This is an applied course where you will develop knowledge, understanding and skills but also awareness of the moving arts media industry sector.

The following two learning centres give NI moving image arts students an overview of employability in the sector but also provide opportunities for individuals from schools, the youth sector and the community to learn skills in digital moving image production using industry standard kit and resources:

  • Nerve Centre (Derry/Londonderry based)
  • Amma Centre (Armagh based)

Exam Overview

The exam is split into Section A, B and C and is worth 80 marks.

Section A is worth 35 marks and has short answer questions based on stimulus material exploring:

  • Film Language
  • Genre and Narrative
  • Representation

Section B is worth 30 marks and has more industry based questions on Creative Production decisions e.g. where to place the camera and shot types and Production Management and Industry Context e.g. film funding, job roles, health and safety. There are also creative questions, for example on interpreting film scripts and storyboards and questions can be based on scenarios as well as clips/stills.

Section C is worth 15 marks and has one stand alone question based on two film sequences of no more than 1.5 minutes each in length. It is always a compare and contrast question and expects students to understand one aspect of film language e.g. mise-en-scene, sound, cinematography and camerawork or editing. The question then asks how this one aspect can be linked to genre, narrative or audience appeals, etc.
