The Learning Outcomes are basically the skills and understanding the student should acquire after completing the unit, the knowledge they should have developed and what they should be able to do.

Most units can be split into 3, 4 or sometimes 5 Assignments, each one reflecting one Learning Outcome. These Learning Outcomes are also reflected by the Grading Criteria i.e. the Learning Outcomes and Grading Criteria are what you base your assignments on but you assess using the Grading Criteria:

  • Grading Criteria = Assessment

The Unit Content simply expands on each Learning Outcome in terms of what the students are expected to know and what resources to access.

Another form of delivery is to offer Assignment 1 first with transparent guidelines on what the student needs to do to improve to a Pass, Merit or a Distinction, hand it back twice to improve, track the grades and then move on to Assignment 2.

Remember that if students are to achieve a Merit overall in the unit they have to get a Merit in...
