The Edexcel Specification Unit Introduction gives you an overview of how the unit maps onto existing industry practice and tells you what the unit links with, Delivery expands on approaches to provision. Ensure that before you write a Unit Guide you understand your department’s budget and the production resources at your disposal – you may want to bespoke a BTEC Media pathway (e.g. radio, print…) based on this to ensure that every unit you offer can be fully delivered in terms of access to production.

The Learning Outcomes are basically the skills and understanding the student should acquire after completing the unit, the knowledge they should have developed and what they should be able to do.

Most units can be split into 3, 4 or sometimes 5 Assignments, each one reflecting one Learning Outcome. These Learning Outcomes are also reflected by the Grading Criteria i.e. the Learning Outcomes and Grading Criteria are what you base your assignments on but you assess using the Grading Criteria:

  • Learning Outcome = Unit Design
  • Grading Criteria = Assessment

The Unit Content simply expands on each Learning Outcome in terms of what the students are expected to know and what resources to access.

In terms of delivery some BTEC teaching can seem very formulaic e.g. one way of teaching is ensuring the students achieve a Pass (P1, P2 and the P3) and after this has been marked and assessed twice hand back to improve to a Merit (M1, M2 and M3), and then a Distinction (D1, D2 and D3).

Another form of delivery is to offer Assignment 1 first with transparent guidelines on what the student needs to do to improve to a Pass, Merit or a Distinction, hand it back twice to improve, track the grades and then move on to Assignment 2.
