Assignment 1 & Learning Outcome 1: Know about Ownership and Funding in the Television and Film Industries

1. You are writing a report for Monday’s Media Guardian about one of the most successful multi-national Media Conglomerates in the world – the News Corporation. The Editor has limited your column space in the newspaper to half a page (500 Words) and must include one image. Comment on:

  • The Chairman and Chief Executive’s role
  • The different businesses they own across different media platforms (cross media ownership)
  • Examples of key media texts from Film, Television and Print Media
  • Their role in the Digitisation of the Media (include specifically global Digital TV provision)
  • Any other non-media assets they own.

2. The Media Guardian’s Editor is thinking of promoting you to Chief Media Correspondent but needs to be certain you understand key media terminology before considering you for the job (it has a sophisticated target audience with significant cultural capital). Identify your understanding of the following terms and write one paragraph on each illustrating with examples:
