AQA GCSE Media Studies Unit 2 Controlled Assessment: Understanding the Media

Rob Miller | Wednesday August 24, 2016

Categories: GCSE, AQA GCSE

Assignment 1: Introduction to the Media

Topic: Moving Image

Key Concepts: Media Language and Audience (Students may also discuss Representation and Institutions)

This introductory assignment aims to introduce students to the analysis and interpretation of media texts through the analysis of media language and the application of media terminology. As an assignment that is introductory it is highly recommended that it is delivered before assignments 2 and 3 in year 1 of a 2 year GCSE. Towards the end of term 1 of AQA GCSE Media Studies, if taught over 1 year, would be appropriate. This is an individual assignment only.

The consumption of media texts by different audiences should be considered and understanding will be demonstrated through a pre-production activity. One assignment will be chosen from AQA’s Assignment Bank 1 that involves two tasks – a 500-700 word (see alternatives below) Analytical Task and a Research, Planning and Presentation Task. From the above taken from the AQA GCSE Specification this is primarily an assignment assessing understanding and use of Media Language and understanding of Audiences.

1. Analyse the opening three minutes of the film Spectre. How does the film engage the interest of its audience? (first 3 minutes only)

2. Present ideas for the opening of an action adventure film. Submit your pre-production ideas as a ten-frame storyboard using drawings, writing or photographs.
