A Mark Scheme to accompany the Specimen Paper

Question 1

1. Television Serial Dramas offer a range of benefits for TV channels:

  • they target a clear audience
  • they may feature or create a celebrity/character
  • they offer the capability to become an on-going franchise

Using examples from your research, develop the above points and add some of your own ideas, to explain why TV serial dramas are essential staples of TV channels. (15 marks)

Suggested content:

  • storylines that are familiar – follow conventions/format of the genre
  • offer known audience needs/pleasures
  • regular characters established with audience who align themselves with them
  • familiar locations – sense of ‘real’ and ‘believable’ attracts audience
  • characters evolve over the series – offer future storylines
  • main storylines that offer option of further series
  • easily marketable to demographic – water-cooler moments

AO1: Tests the ability of students to recall, select and communicate their knowledge and understanding

Level 6 (9-10) Informed assessment of the appeal of TV Serial Drama in attracting and sustaining audiences for TV channel programmers.

Level 5 (7-8) Detailed knowledge of the appeal of TV Serial Drama in attracting and sustaining audiences for TV channel programmers referring to all three bullet points.
Two well-chosen examples are utilised convincingly in the response.
