The whole point of AQA AS Media Studies coursework is that students will be working to set briefs produced by AQA that are changed every two years. For 2017 assessment there are three briefs, this guide relates to Brief One.

The Little Picturehouse

On the brief there are three ‘Tasks’ reflecting three different media: Broadcasting, Print and E Media. For purposes of assessment, students only need to complete two linked tasks but they must evidence two media platforms. This guide will be focusing on:

  • Broadcasting – creating a 3-minute film opening sequence
  • Print – creating 3 A4 pages for a promotional booklet

Key things to remember about this brief:

  • The Little Picturehouse is making indirect reference to the existing Picturehouse Cinema chain
  • The Little Picturehouse are running a film competition
  • Despite given genres, AQA guidance indicates students are “free to work in whatever genre they wish?
  • Creativity is encouraged through the study of real media

Students will be engaging in and will be assessed on:

  • Pre-Production (for both production areas)
  • Productions x 2 (moving image and print)
  • Evaluation (1500 words linking both production pieces with reference to the third platform – e media, target audiences and relevant media concepts).

The research, pre-production materials (detailed below), the production work and the evaluation need to be explicitly linked and demonstrate an understanding of Media Studies concepts. Only the Production can be group work (Max 4 per group).
