Skills, Experience & Training

Rob Miller is a Creative Consultant, Freelance Writer and an experienced and successful Media and Film teacher and Curriculum Manager working in the post 14 education sector within Sixth Form, FE and Adult Education. He has also worked in schools facilitating Gifted and Talented projects and Media Excellence Days for Year 9 and Year 10 pupils and worked with Careers Departments and Heads of Media from a number of schools – this included mentoring GTP Media Heads of Department and also a Media Head of Department who went on to become an Advanced Skills Teacher. His wealth of experience in Media Education is across all sectors.

His freelance work includes developing in depth GCSE Media Studies Schemes of Work and GCSE, AS and A2 Teaching Support Materials for Edusites. Currently he is also a WJEC GCSE and A2 Examiner and will be examining papers during summer 2011. He mentors both NQT and experienced teachers of Media Studies and at the annual BFI Media Studies Conference where he has run teacher workshops for the BFI since 2003 – sessions have included Teaching Narrative, Genre and Representation, Teaching Advertising: Industry and Analysis, The British Film Industry and in summer 2011 Changing Representations in the Media. His wealth of materials are available to teachers on request during and after the workshops and he regularly stays in contact with delegates in a professional capacity. He has also worked with the BFI in an editorial capacity and been asked to run Secondary Media INSET days at the NFT.

The Media department he managed for ten years was awarded a grade 1 in 2003 and 2007 at Ofsted inspection and regularly excelled in terms of national benchmarks of achievement, retention and value added offering level 2 and level 3 courses including AS, A2, GCSE and BTEC Media. He project managed a new build and was responsible for a capitation budget, line managing part and full time teachers and technicians. He achieved his PGCE from the Institute of Education in 1999 and Professional Standards Payments in 2002 and 2007 and am DFEE and IFL registered with QTLS. He shared good practice for five years as founder member of a Lesson Observation Team raising quality in both teaching and learning with additional responsibility for mentoring new staff into the process of observation. His own teaching was regularly graded Outstanding and was frequently observed in reference to sharing good practice. Student Satisfaction Surveys consistently revealed the learners’ approval and appreciation of his professional practice. He has an excellent understanding of Media theory and production and strong industry knowledge, in terms of outside interests he has contacts at the BFI, ASA and the BBFC.

Rob is committed to Media Education and a passionate advocate of media literacy being taught at primary level and hopes that recent proposed changes to QTLS will allow outstanding FE / Sixth Form lecturers the opportunity of teaching within the school sector. As a regular patron of the arts and film festivals such as LFF and a member of the BFI and the Tate his industry knowledge of the visual arts remains contemporary. He visits both independent and multiplex cinemas consuming both independent and mainstream film and has a significantly broad range of DVD teaching resources. He rabidly consumes News, Current Affairs and developments within the Television industry and is currently writing a non-fiction book that in part is cultural commentary and looks at the role of all media forms in the advent of convergence and 2.0. Changing technology is rapidly changing the face of the subject we teach.

Rob’s vocational training and experience includes an LSIS 2010 Safeguarding qualification, Management and Leadership accreditation and responsibility for running INSET sessions in Pedagogy and Differentiation, Post Ofsted Action Planning, E Learning, SAR Writing, Departmental Management and one to one sessions in Post Observation Action Planning. Quality Assurance remains a key area of focus – as member of the Curriculum and Standards Committee and Chair of the Quality Group he advised Principals and constructed detailed, jargon free reports on Curriculum Provision and Intervention, Data Collection Systems and AS and A2 achievement.
