Tell the world

What do you want to tell the world? It’s a good idea to have something you want to talk about or discuss with the world. This is not the frustration you get on the bus when you have to stand all the way again, and you really do want to tell someone something. That could make a reasonable item for a short comedy sketch, but it will not make a film or television programme. You may just want to tell the world that you can write...

Radio Part 1 »

Jeremy Orlebar | Wednesday November 11, 2009

Why Radio?

Radio is a great medium to work in. Radio is a great way to listen to music, and radio is a great friend on a long journey or just at home.

At one time radio was the only way to hear the latest pop songs, and albums and to keep up to date with the top selling singles in the charts.

Before music television (MTV began in America on August 1st 1981) young people listened to the radio, and bought singles after they had heard them on...

Radio Interviews »

Radio is about people, and getting people to talk is the most basic job of a radio presenter, researcher or producer.

Working in radio you will talk to a very large number of people on and off air.

On air it is important to get the most out of every contributor. Questions need to be tailored to the needs of the programme and to what the audience expects. You have to help the contributor to do this.

You may be talking to someone who has...

Community Radio Stations or RSL radio – Restricted Service Licence Radio Stations exist in most communities.

They are excellent places to make contact with as they can present opportunities for students in terms of observing and participating in radio production.

Try local hospitals too as they often have internal radio stations.

Setting up an RSL is possible and is covered in Ofcom’s website and Ofcom’s Guide to Community Radio is a...

The Now Show & Satire »

Jeremy Orlebar | Monday October 03, 2011

Categories: Courses, GCSE, OCR GCSE, Radio, Radio Comedy, Hot Entries

BBC Radio 4’s The Now Show fits cosily into the category or genre of satire but with only some of its Swiftian connotations. This is not satire to hurt, or pillory or induce change. It is satire to gently entertain raising some pertinent political and moral questions in the course of entertaining and topically informed audience. It is more like witty after dinner conversation catching up on the more bizarre areas of the week’s news, with...

Understanding Radio Comedy »

Nicole Ponsford | Wednesday September 28, 2011

Categories: Courses, GCSE, OCR GCSE, Radio, Radio Comedy, Hot Entries

Introduction

Although TV Comedy is a favourite, many of our top shows started on the radio: Little Britain, Harry Hill’s Fruit Corner and Goodness Gracious Me. It also brings in a range of genres like sketch shows, quiz shows, sit-coms and one-liners with writer-performers like Milton Jones or Miranda Hart. It can be surreal like The Mighty Boosh or traditional like I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue.

Students will need to research this and...
