Brief Definition:

Image analysis is the way in which an audience ‘reads’ the meaning of a media text image.

One of the ways image analysis works is to look for meaning through signs and symbols suggested by the way a scene is set up and filmed.

Signs and symbols in media texts are polysemic which means they are open to many interpretations. The different possible meanings in media texts depend on two things. The first is the way the...

Jeremy Orlebar | Thursday September 24, 2009

Publishers like magazines aimed at the teen market. It is an easy way to reach this young readership, and a way of marketing a huge range of teen products. Look on the shelves in the paper shop and there is a big range of titles, but very few are aimed directly at teenagers.

The available income of this group has risen substantially over the past 5-10 years, and this is the stage when young people form the likes, dislikes, passions and opinions...

Men’s Magazines, in their printed form developed in terms of publication and circulation in the 1980s. Many reasons were offered for this, particularly in light of the fact that Women’s Magazines have been around for hundreds of years. A manifest, obvious reason could explore changing cultural representations in reference to how masculinity was perceived and that the 1980s was just about the right time for men to finally embrace a magazine...

Q Magazine – The Music Press in the 1980s »

Stephen Hill | Monday July 06, 2009

Categories: Magazines, More on Magazines, Music Press, News

Q Magazine was launched by EMAP in 1986. With Dave Hepworth and Mark Ellen as editors, it was very much a grown up version of Smash Hits.

When discussing the legacy of EMAP in the transformation of the mores of the music press in the 1980s it should be mentioned that the legacy of Q has been considered in much more detail than that of Smash HitsEamonn Forde has written extensively on the role of Q in establishing the ‘monoglottic’...

If your Media Studies production is an audio visual piece then it will most likely involve the use of some music.  This might be in the background of an advert, to make a film trailer more exciting, or as the focus of a music video.

What you need to remember is that even though it’s incredibly easy to download music and sound effects from the Internet, it’s not always a good idea to use those files in your media production.

Keith Langton | Wednesday February 11, 2009

Categories: Advertising, More on Advertising, Magazines, More on Magazines, Other Topics, Cover Work

Design and draw a magazine advertisement for a new healthy juice drink. The advertisement should appeal to parents and early teenagers.

You need to consider the Target Audiences for this product in your design – bright colours and simple language will appeal to young people, while emphasis on healthiness and the lack of additives will make the drink more appealing to parents.

When you are happy with your design, annotate (make notes),...
