Viki Walden

Viki Walden is an experienced Media and Film Studies lecturer and has taught on a range of courses including: Entry Level 3, BTEC Introductory, BTEC First, BTEC National, AS/A2 Media, AS/A2 Film, Extended Project and HNC.

She is a Film specialist with a BA in Media Arts and MA (by research) in Film Studies. She has experience both in inner city further education and suburban sixth forms. She has been a lead teacher for A2 Film and has particular experience working with underachieving students to produce high level results, often well beyond their minimum target grades. She is most proud of her 2011 A2 Film results which included a previously E Grade student getting 100% in the A2 exam. In 2010 Viki completed a level 5 certificate in Leadership and Management in Education.

She has been a returning contributor to the BFI Education Programme INSETs, delivering a seminar on Borders and Belonging: Immigration Film in the UK at the 2011 Media Teacher’s Conference and has experience in the film industry. She has produced music videos for British bands Trauma Pet and Snuff Radio and three short films: Thou Shalt Not, Baby Snatcher and Slide Away and has recently started writing reviews and band interviews for Independent Voice webzine.

Viki is currently producing a million pound budget feature film to be set in Birmingham, developing two documentary projects and a music video for London based Illyrus and in her free time is writing a Dystopic television script entitled “The Isle” and studying for a PhD in Holocaust Commemoration and Film.  Alongside her production work, Viki is also a freelance writer specialising in educational material for Film and Media, a private tutor, examiner and is available for consultancy, training and educational workshops.

Consultancy and Teacher Training

  • Creative Production Work in the Classroom (i.e. creative film-making with any equipment from basic to professional, getting students to develop creative and original ideas, developing photo storyboards in a filmic style, how to teach screenwriting techniques and script format)
  • Using Film to Support The Teaching of Other Subjects (i.e. Film to engage History students, MFL A Level film texts film language support, teaching film language for English teachers, setting up a Learning Support Film Studies class)
  • Setting up and Managing a Media / Film Studies Course (i.e. developing course overviews, scheme of work development, creative work advice, extra curriculum activities and how to support Film/Media students, setting up a Film/ Media Extended Project qualification and delivering outstanding results)
  • Teaching and Learning Strategies (i.e. Delivering outstanding lessons. using Active Learning Groups in the classroom, embedding exam technique into lessons, maximising the revision period, improving research coursework results, thinking Skills)
  • Film Studies Content (i.e. advice and guidance on teaching strategies for Film Studies GCSE, AS and A Level Film units)

Student Workshops Available | Film and Media Specific

(Day Workshops or ½ term weekly workshops* (*London and Suburbs only)):

  • The Mini-Film Project (Can be a day workshop or weekly afternoon workshop over one ½ term, during this period students will develop a short film in groups using the institution’s technology, but learning how to maximise their creative output)
  • Write a Screenplay (Can be a day workshop in which basic screen writing skills and script templates are introduced or a weekly afternoon workshop over one ½ term in which students will learn about screenwriting techniques, character development, dialogue and creating visual motifs and themes in a screenplay. In the longer workshops students will be offered 121 online support for developing their own screenplays with a chance to pitch their idea at the end of the course)

Rest of School

  • MFL: A Level Film Case Study Workshops (Morning screening of A Level MFL film case study followed by an afternoon exploring film language analysis of the film through group activities)
  • History and Film Study Days (Can be suited to requirements, film screening will be followed by relating the filmic representation to historical evidence)
  • Film Studies for English Students (Day workshop where students will be introduced to a key genre and through clips will develop an understanding of film language, representation and ideology and genre/ narrative studies)
  • Holocaust and Tolerance Workshop Days (Using film clips and photographs students will be introduced to the history of the Holocaust and the intolerance of the period, they will be asked to consider a variety of evidence to develop ideas regarding why the Holocaust occurred? How it was able to happen? What was life like for victims and survivors? And How could it be prevented today? – suitable for History students, PSHE or school Equality and Diversity events)
