Unit 1 Intro to Media and Textual Analysis (Heat and Coronation Street)

Based on Heat magazine (print/factual) and Coronation Street (audio-visual; fiction); these ideas will hopefully help the students to create visually appealing end results. I have yet to find a way of making these two products work as one PowerPoint for AO1 so I usually opt to do it separately as two different methods of presentation as they are very different products. These are merely my suggestions that have been used and have produced some high quality work from my students who have enjoyed this and developed basic skills in use of effective PPTs/magazine layout. They have also gained key skills in use of media terminology and shown clear knowledge, understanding and skills in these two chosen media products.

AO1

Get the students to create a visual and auditory PowerPoint on Coronation Street with the key points on the following assessment objectives (they could use Moviemaker or Serif movie instead to make a small documentary type film on Corrie as well for AO1):

Assessment Objectives

  • Developments in the advances of technology (use of HDTV/Internet/Mobile phones 3G etc and digital TV)
  • Audience needs and lifestyles (bring in Maslow’s theory here as well as Uses and Gratifications)
  • Cultural changes (ethnicity reflected in the soap and the range of topics now covered)
  • Multi-nationalism (where is it shown abroad?)
  • Economic reasons...
