OCR GCSE Media Studies Unit B321 Sample Assignments

Example Task 1

This is marked out of 60. The topic is celebrity.

In a minimum of 800 words and a maximum of 1,500 words, compare and contrast how a woman’s weekly lifestyle magazine and a website like Perez Hilton represent celebrity. 

E.g. Hello = reverential, contributes to the myth of celebrity and Heat = irreverent, deconstruct celebrity status.

Use the appropriate technical language throughout.

Discuss:

  • The house style of the magazine / website
  • The colour schemes employed - compare and contrast
  • The layout of graphics and pictures in magazine and website
  • The fonts used in both media
  • The anchoring texts
  • The coverlines
  • The choice of images
  • Each media’s mode of address
  • Representations in both media
  • The target audiences
  • And how both the magazine and the website are trying to satisfy a need in the audience.

Assessment Objectives

Candidates’ knowledge and understanding of media products and contexts (AO1)

Candidates’ understanding of how meanings are created through analysis of media products, using media key concepts and appropriate terminology (AO2).

Produce a front cover for a magazine that deconstructs the myth of celebrity superiority constructed by Hello and OK. I.e. - a magazine that has an ironic tone and...
