Training
Nicole Ponsford is an award winning, Advanced Skills Teacher of Media and New Technologies. She has worked in a variety of schools, from leafy Surrey schools to Academies, to inner-City schools on the up to ‘Outstanding’ secondary schools. After setting up Media Studies from scratch in these, she has gone on to advising Principals, schools, LEAs and finally nationally.
Nicole has been nominated twice by her students and staff for Teaching Awards, winning her first as ‘Outstanding New Teacher’. She has written for magazines, the BBC and GTC, and worked with BSF to ensure new builds put media at the heart of teaching and learning. She has been rated ‘Outstanding / 1’ several times as both a teacher, Head of Department and part of the Leadership Team. Teaching AQA and OCR GCSE and A Level, and BTEC Media Studies, and also having a history as an examiner, she offers a wealth of expertise in running departments, procurement and raising standards in teaching and learning.
Through Media Edu, she is offering a chance to come to your school and help you, your team and your students. You can either choose one of the following for a training half or full day, or you can discuss a personalised day to specifically suit your needs.
Continuing Professional Development - Whole School and Department
- Practical skills with new technologies (For example, use of Mac hardware and software, video pre-production, production and post-production, photography, advertising)
- Teaching and learning strategies (moving from ‘Good To Outstanding’, being a ‘Dare Devil’ in the class room)
- Using new technologies: in resourcing a department or school, improving your school website, use of new technologies in the classroom (for example, she has worked with Vodafone, Sony and Apple here)
- Mentoring teachers - non-specialists or new teachers to the courses, helping with every issue and concern! Things you were afraid to ask or can’t, including confrontation conversations, stretching the budget, last-minute panics and other hand-holding strategies
- Use of multi-media and new technologies
- Use of social networks in school
- Using new media in and outside of the classroom
- Working with industry - how to make the most of local and national businesses with your school
Specific to Media and Film Studies Head of Department and Subject Leaders
- Planning lessons/ schemes of work and implementing - for all exam boards and specifications
- Creating a new course - a day focused on looking at proposals, budgets and procurement tips, as well as the day to day running of a department. Templates for administration, what to prepare for and how to get the best out of your team and students. All boards and exam specifications.
- Consistency: Planning, Assessment and Monitoring tips. How to create ‘one language’ for your team and become ‘Outstanding’.
- Improving your course - support from SLT, the community, industry and inside school
- Monitoring and Assessment - support with moderation, observations, preparing for OFSTED
Student-Led
- Working with a group or class of students
- Exam revision - intensive day course to support students with key concepts, language, structuring an examination response and timings
- Catch up on Controlled Assessment and coursework with an expert - Nicole will come to your school an run sessions with you to ensure their work is of the highest quality. Afterwards she will discuss targets for the future of the class and support you with lesson planning
- Raising standards and securing student engagement at crucial times in the course - if you have a large or difficult class, she will either take a small group for intensive work or help you work with the whole class, year group, planning a day of catch up, sorting out assessment and tracking data and reports.
