Find two print based advertisements from a magazine like Heat or FHM and do a deconstruction (a breakdown) of key ideas. Make sure that you hand the adverts in with the work that you produce here. Use the following to help you in your analysis:

Portrayal of people in the advertisement

How old are they?

What gender are they?

What racial group do they come from?

What social classes are represented? How do you know?

What do the clothing codes tell you?

What types of facial expressions do they have?

What is their posture? Why?

What roles and stereotypes are being represented?

How would you describe the relationship between the people?

Technical codes

Is the advert is colour or in black and white?

How have the images been framed and cropped?

Are all the elements in the image in focus? If not, why?

Has anything been left out of the advert?

How has it been lit and what is the camera angle?

Text included in the advertisement

How does the slogan relate to the image?

What other information are we given to help explain the images?

Who is being addressed?

What typeface has been used? Why?

Objects that are included

Where is the advert set? How do we know this?

What objects are included in the advert?

Does the product appear in the advert?

What else could have been included but has not? Why?

What colour codes are at work?
