Unit 2 Overview: Understanding The Media - Controlled Assessment Unit

What students have to do…

In Unit 2 candidates will produce:

  • Assignment 1 - Introductory assignment with two tasks
  • Assignment 2 - Two tasks about cross-media platforms
  • Assignment 3 - Practical production and evaluation

  • Each assignment chosen from a different bank of assignments.
  • Students work individually. For assignment 3, groups of candidates may collaborate but their evaluative responses must be their own.
  • Students must cover three discrete media forms/platforms.

Suggested Timescale

Assignment 1 - 10 lessons
Assignment 2 - 10 lessons
Assignment 3 - 13 lessons

  • Moving Image
  • Advertising & Marketing
  • Print
  • Web-based Media
  • Packaging of DVDs
  • Promotion of Music
  • Children’s Comics

As each platform can only be used once, it is worth considering what your students are going to do for the production - Assignment 3 – perhaps working backwards from there.

ASSIGNMENT 1 - INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA

AQA suggests Assignment 1 is taught and completed over approx 10 lessons.

Students are required to…

1. Select one assignment from Assignment Bank 1 writing approx 500 words for task 1 working primarily with the key concepts of media language and audience and secondarily representation and institutions.
