Introductory Assignment with Two Related Tasks drawn from Assignment Bank 1 - Radio

  • 1. Analyse the opening five minutes of a radio mainly talk show. Showing codes and conventions. How does the show appeal to its audience?

  • 2. Prepare a script for a radio show aimed at a specific audience with references to idents, inserts, bedding music, etc.

Scheme of Work for Radio Assignment 1

Lesson 1

  • Introduction to radio as a unique medium including a little history.
  • Discuss different genres of radio: talk radio / music radio / news radio / hybrids. See MediaEdu Radio Part 1.

Activities

  • Listen briefly to different radio stations.
  • What are the ingredients of radio? Listen for DJ or Presenter / Music / Idents / Adverts / Trailers / News / Weather.

Lesson 2

  • Understand the codes and conventions of the medium of radio.
  • It’s a secondary medium as people listen while doing something else. In the car, jogging, in the kitchen.
  • It’s value is immediacy – discuss why this is.

Activities

  • Select one station to analyse – radio 2 is a music station with talk (OK for this assignment as long as the 5 min segment has more talk than music) – listen to an evening programme on iPlayer.
