Question 1 – Describe the key conventions of the television quiz show. (25 marks)

You should discuss:

i) the Host (KC=ML/C)

ii) the contestants and how they are selected (KC=R)

iii) the questions that are asked / the rounds or structure of the show (KC=ML/C)

iv) the studio setting and (KC=ML/C)

v) the prizes that are offered. (KC=I)

Use TWO different quiz shows to demonstrate and explain your answers – the quiz shows that you discuss may be current or from a past period of television. (KC=ML/C)

Question 2 – Explain your understanding of the differences between “quiz shows” and “game shows”. Explain why they might attract different Target Audiences. (25 marks)

i) You may wish to discuss the differences between which television channel a show is broadcast on and its time slot – for example, how does the traditional BBC quiz show differ from the traditional ITV quiz show? (KC=ML/C)

ii) You may wish to discuss the differences between programmes that offer money or goods as prizes and those which do not. (KC=ML/C, I)

iii) Which target audiences might be attracted by each type of programme and why? (KC=A)

iv) Explain why such Target Audiences would be valuable to a television programmer....
