An Introduction to Media Studies for KS3 Students

The King Richard School in Portsmouth have been piloting Media Studies with KS3 students. We’ve developed a new programme of study for Media which includes the following topics:

Media Studies in Year 7

  • What_is_Media.ppt
  • Newspapers
  • Pop Bands & The Music Industry

Media Studies in Year 8

  • Radio & Podcasting
  • Soap Operas
  • Magazines
  • Comics & Cartooning

Media Studies in Year 9

  • Modern Technology
  • Film Studies & Moving Image Analysis
  • Pop Bands & The Music Industry

The assessment programme for these units have been tailored to dovetail with AQA GCSE Media Studies in KS4. We’ve created a series of National Curriculum level descriptors to allow students and staff to track progress throughout the Key Stage.

During the first six weeks of term, we introduce the new Year 7 students to Media Studies as a subject, its relevance to the world and everyday life.

This unit covers a basic introduction to Photoshop Elements, the graphics package we find most accessible to students, using computers and skills such as layering that allow an image to be built up and edited in stages.

Every sixth lesson the students sit a formal assessment and are awarded a National Curriculum level using our tailor-made assessment structure. The skills are introduced by class demonstration, student mirroring the activity on their work stations and the key steps are...
